These are the future “black holes” of Hunedoara County. The shaded areas on the map represent the concession, exploration or exploitation permits of European Goldfields Deva SRL and Deva Gold SA mining companies. Both are owned by the Canadian low-cost mining company – Eldorado Gold (TSX: ELD).
One mining conglomerate plans to open up to seven gold mining open pits in vast areas of the Romanian Metalieri Mountains. The following perimeters are targeted: Certeju de Sus, Băița – Crăciuneşti, Hondol – Sălişte, Troița – Piţiguş, Vărmaga, Deva-Muncel and Brad. The yellow colored spots are owned by Deva Gold SA and the orange ones by its sister company – European Goldfield Deva SRL.
The Hunedoara EPA is gradually assessing the proposed mining projects. In November 2013 it issued the environmental permit for the Certej project and in July 2014 it announced that it has started the procedure for the environmental impact assessment for Băița-Crăciuneşti.
