\nRosia Montana\/Romania, 6 June 2018 – \u201cLast month ICOMOS, the body of UNESCO experts, confirmed what a great World Heritage site Rosia Montana could make. Today the Dancila government asked UNESCO to stop for Rosia Montana to become a World Heritage site. This has never happened anywhere before. It confirms that PSD-ALDE still want to make the dirty gold mine happen; that they are striking a deal with Gabriel Resources. We won\u2019t let them crush what we fought for! Together we stopped them before and together we can stop them again,\u201d<\/em> says Roxana Pencea-Bradatan, founding director of Mining Watch Romania.

In an unprecedented move, Romania\u2019s government has stopped the procedure of making Ro\u015fia Montan\u0103 a UNESCO World Heritage site. According to news released today, the request was submitted by the Ministry of Culture and sent to the Romanian Ambassador to UNESCO through the Foreign Ministry. The nomination procedure was halted by the government without any public announcement; without any debate.<\/p>\n

The decision to include Ro\u015fia Montan\u0103 among the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage sites was scheduled to be taken by the World Heritage Committee at its 42nd session, to be held from 29 June to 2 July in Manama, Bahrain.<\/p>\n

The government claims that an arbitration procedure brought forward by Canadian Gabriel Resources asking for $4.4bn in damages for not having been given the green light for their mine proposal at Rosia Montana, is the reason behind today’s move. However, since a UNESCO nomination is no hindrance to a claim of damages over past actions but a physical hindrance to realising the mine proposed by Gabriel Resources, todays news may well be a first step in Romania\u2019s government having struck a deal with Gabriel Resources. In return for a green light for the gold mine, the parties to the arbitration case theoretically could agree to drop the case.<\/p>\n

In response to today\u2019s news, the Save Rosia Montana campaign is calling citizens to take again the streets for Rosia Montana by organising and participating in protests this Friday (8. June 2018) from 18:00 onwards. In addition citizens can sign a petition to UNESCO.<\/p>\n

A travers une action sans pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent au niveau diplomatique international, le gouvernement roumain a bloqu\u00e9 la proc\u00e9dure d\u2019inscription de Rosia Montana sur la Liste des sites UNESCO. Selon les m\u00e9dias, la demande a \u00e9t\u00e9 formul\u00e9e par le Minist\u00e8re de la Culture et envoy\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019ambassadeur roumain \u00e0 l\u2019UNESCO par le Minist\u00e8re des Affaires \u00e9trang\u00e8res. Ceci est arriv\u00e9 trois semaines avant le moment de la prise de d\u00e9cision finale par le Comit\u00e9 UNESCO.<\/p>\n

La d\u00e9cision d\u2019inclusion de Rosia Montata au Patrimoine mondial de l\u2019humanit\u00e9 \u00e9tait pr\u00e9vue pour la 41e r\u00e9union du Comit\u00e9 UNESCO, qui se tiendra du 29 juin au 2 juillet \u00e0 Manama, Br\u00e9sil.<\/p>\n

Le gouvernement pr\u00e9tend que son mouvement d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui se justifie par la proc\u00e9dure d\u2019arbitrage initi\u00e9e par la compagnie canadienne Gabriel Resources. L\u2019enjeu est de 4,4 milliards de dollars et l\u2019ouverture du projet minier. Malgr\u00e9 cela, une nomination \u00e0 la liste de l\u2019UNESCO n\u2019est pas un obstacle pour une demande de d\u00e9dommagement pour des nuisances commises dans le pass\u00e9, mais un obstacle concret pour la r\u00e9alisation du projet minier de Rosia Montana. Par cons\u00e9quent, les informations sur la demande du gouvernement indique plut\u00f4t le d\u00e9but d\u2019une n\u00e9gociation entre le gouvernement et Gabriel Resources. En \u00e9change des approbations finales pour la r\u00e9alisation du projet minier, les deux parties impliqu\u00e9es dans l\u2019arbitrage peuvent renoncer au proc\u00e8s \u00e0 tout moment.<\/p>\n

En r\u00e9action aux nouvelles du jour, la Campagne Salvati Rosia Montana appelle \u00e0 nouveau les citoyens \u00e0 une nouvelle manifestation pour la d\u00e9fense de Rosia Montana, vendredi 8 juin 2018, partout dans le pays, \u00e0 partir de 18 heures. De plus, les citoyens peuvent signer une p\u00e9tition adress\u00e9e au Centre du Patrimoine mondial de l\u2019UNESCO. Par ce texte, nous demandons que le dossier suive son cours et qu\u2019il entre dans l\u2019agenda du Comit\u00e9 du Patrimoine mondiale qui se tiendra \u00e0 la fin du mois.<\/p>\n
