{"id":3705,"date":"2021-11-24T14:08:10","date_gmt":"2021-11-24T12:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/miningwatch.ro\/?p=3705"},"modified":"2021-11-24T14:33:41","modified_gmt":"2021-11-24T12:33:41","slug":"activists-derail-euro-suns-mine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miningwatch.ro\/en\/activists-derail-euro-suns-mine\/","title":{"rendered":"Activists derail Euro Sun\u2019s plans for the Rovina mine"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><i>NGO, and local opposition groups, have today announced the environmental safeguarding of lands \u2013 totaling <\/i>23,009 sq. m<i>\u2013 within ESM\u2019s proposed Rovina Valley footprint.\u00a0<\/i><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><i>Canadian gold miner\u2019s hopes of establishing Romania\u2019s first open-pit copper and gold mine now in peril \u2013 due to strict Romanian property ownership laws.<\/i><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><i>ESM had hoped to list on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) later this year.<\/i><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><i>ESM\u2019s setback mirrors Eldorado Gold\u2019s operational difficulties in Romania and comes against backdrop of reported company losses of $5.5 million in 2020-2021.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Activists derail Euro Sun&#8217;s Rovina mine. The safeguarded lands, within the footprint of the mine, can be viewed via this <a href=\"https:\/\/miningwatch.ro\/harti\/rovina\/en\">online map<\/a>.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>November 24, 2021<b> <\/b>\u2013 A Romanian-based campaign group, Mining Watch Romania, has today announced the environmental safeguarding of 23,009 sq.m of land within the footprint of Euro Sun Mining\u2019s (ESM.TSX) proposed Rovina Valley site, in western Romania \u2013 a move that will almost certainly derail Euro Sun plans to commence works at the site in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">These lands, which are now owned in part by Declic, a campaign NGO and member of Mining Watch Romania, fall across three communes (Bucure\u0219ci, Criscior, and Buce\u0219) and are strategically located within Euro Sun Mining\u2019s proposed development area. The site\u2019s viability and future \u2013 as the EU\u2019s largest proposed copper and gold mining project \u2013 depended on the company&#8217;s ability to secure all property rights within the site footprint.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Euro Sun Mining, a Canada-based development-stage mining company, had hoped to establish Romania&#8217;s first open-pit copper and gold mine, via a Romanian-based subsidiary, Samax Romania. This would would have been the largest such project in the EU.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">However, its proposals have met with fierce opposition at local, national and international level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Residents from Bucure\u0219ci, Criscior, and Buce\u0219, in Hunedoara County, which fall within the footprint of the proposed mine, have collectively opposed Euro Sun Mining\u2019s proposals via the &#8216;Dezvolt\u0103m Durabil Zona Mun\u021bilor Metaliferi&#8217; [\u2018Association for Sustainable Development of the Metaliferi Mountains\u2019] initiative, and benefited from the support of numerous activists from the Save Rosia Montana campaign \u2013 a group that campaigned for a ban to the use cyanide in mining and that fought against the EU\u2019s proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (\u201cTTIP\u201d) \u2013 via analysis, expertise and campaign support. Their opposition centers, largely, on the upstream design of Euro Sun\u2019s proposed waste facility at Rovina, as well as environmental impacts, to items such as ground water in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This is not the first time that proposed mining explorations in Romania have experienced coordinated opposition. In 2013, the Rosia Montana mining project, owned by Gabriel Resources, triggered the largest ever social and environmental movement seen in Romania, following state-led efforts to expedite the company\u2019s exploration approvals. Gabriel Resources subsequently sued Romania at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes following the rejection of its plans<span class=\"s3\">.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>More recently, the Certej mining project, owned by Eldorado Gold \u2013 one of the biggest gold producers in the world \u2013 faced opposition from NGOs, and a network of local groups, to its proposed explorations. This opposition ultimately succeeded in annulling the company\u2019s urban plan in 2019, and thus halted the development of the mine.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Euro Sun Mining has faced its own, company-wide, setbacks in recent years. In 2020-2021, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/eurosunmining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/ESM-FS-June-30-2021-filing.pdf\"><span class=\"s4\">reported losses totaling $5.5million<\/span><\/a>, and, prior to this, suffered reputational damage in Romania, following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riseproject.ro\/articol\/omul-care-a-ascuns-aurul-din-hunedoara-in-insulele-virgine\/\"><span class=\"s4\">revelations<\/span><\/a> that senior figures within the company had employed the services of Mossak Fonesca, the off-shore law firm involved in the global Panama Papers investigation. In August, ESM had also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proactiveinvestors.co.uk\/companies\/news\/958513\/euro-sun-mining-intends-to-seek-listing-on-london-stock-exchange-main-market-with-admission-expected-to-occur-in-the-third-quarter-of-2021-958513.html\"><span class=\"s4\">expressed hope<\/span><\/a> of securing a listing on the London Stock Exchange by the end of 2021 \u2013 a move yet to be realized.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Rovina Valley development site, which is largely covered by forest and situated near the Vulcan Mountain nature reserve, was last mined over thirty years ago. However, in May 2015, Euro Sun Mining \u2013 then operating under as Carpathian Gold \u2013 announced that it had received an exploration license for the site. This permit, which covers a site range of 27,678 km2, was granted by the country\u2019s National Agency for Mineral Resources.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Given today\u2019s developments, and Romania\u2019s strict property ownership laws, it is unclear how Euro Sun can proceed with its proposed project in the Rovina Valley in the absence of landowner approval. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b><i>Commenting on Euro Sun\u2019s proposals and opposition-led efforts to protect the Rovina site from exploration:<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>\u201cInvestors should think twice before putting their money into a project that is not only flawed, in its design, but also opposed by locals within the Rovina Valley,\u201d<\/i> <b>Tudor Br\u0103d\u0103\u021ban, executive director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.declic.ro\">Declic<\/a>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>\u201cWe will use all legal means available to safeguard and defend the interests of local citizens\u201d<\/i>, <b>Roxana Pencea, Mining Watch Rom\u00e2nia.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>\u201cI&#8217;ve asked Euro Sum several times what they intend to do if people refuse to sell their land to make way for this mine \u2013 and I\u2019m yet to receive a response. To me, this suggests there is no plan B for this project and that they are simply hoping to ride roughshod over the legitimate concerns and opposition of local residents\u201d<\/i>, <b>Adriana Maucher, local landowner and opponent of the proposed mine.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>\u201cOver the past five years, young people have moved to this part of the country and given fresh life to the Buce\u0219 and Bucure\u0219ci communes. The Company, through its subsidiaries, is a gold and copper exploration and development mining company focused primarily on its Rovina Valley gold and copper project located in west-central Romania. The Company&#8217;s project is located approximately 300-kilometers northwest of the capital city of Bucharest. The Company&#8217;s Rovina Valley Project consists of three copper-gold porphyry systems, such as Rovina, Colnic and Ciresata. The Colnic Deposit is located approximately 2.5 kilometers (KM) south of the Rovina Deposit and the Ciresata Deposit is approximately four kilometers south of the Colnic Deposit.
