Euro Sun’s Rovina mining project & Local opposition

Romania is getting a new megalomaniac mining project, this time near Brad. Instead of forests, pastures, and orchards, the mining company wants to build two massive quarries and store hundreds of thousands of tons of mining waste in Rovina.

Euro Sun Mining, a Canadian company would be the sole owner of the gold and copper mines. And the people would be left with only the widespread destruction of the land and the ever-present threat of toxic mining waste.

Residents have joined forces with civil society to oppose the mining project. This map depicts the scale of the mining project as well as the location of the land in the path of the Rovina mine.

The mining company was unable to obtain a social license. Concerns raised by the local community have never received a consistent response. The local group Dezvoltăm Durabil Zona Munților Metaliferi was founded last year to fight the mining proposal.

Furthermore, Adriana Maucher and the Declic Association hold six parcels of land within the project’s footprint. The site’s viability, and future development, depended on the company’s ability to secure all property rights within the site footprint – and the announcement that these lands are not for sale, is likely to derail Euro Sun Mining’s plans to commence work in Rovina Valley in 2022.

Euro Sun’s Rovina mining project & Local opposition comments:

“Investors should think twice before putting their money into a project that is not only flawed, in its design, but also opposed by locals within the Rovina Valley,” Tudor Brădățan, executive director of Declic.

“I’ve asked Euro Sum several times what they intend to do if people refuse to sell their land to make way for this mine – and I’m yet to receive a response. To me, this suggests there is no plan B for this project and that they are simply hoping to ride roughshod over the legitimate concerns and opposition of local residents”, Adriana Maucher, local landowner and opponent of the proposed mine.
