The government of Asturias has definitely rejected Asturgold’s gold mine project in Tapia de Casariego (Spain)

ASTURGOLD RECEIVE A NEGATIVE DECISION ON THE AMENDED ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT

ORO NO association wants to show its huge happiness and satisfaction for the decision from the Commission for Environmental Affairs of the Principality of Asturias (CAMA), who issued a negative Declaration of Impact Assessment (DIA) regarding Asturgold’s mine Project in Tapia de Casariego (Spain).

ORO NO understood that there was no choice but to reject Asturgold’s project was the only possible decision, taking into account the breaches in many legal requirements, as well as critical environmental issues, as was proved by technical and legal reports, including those from Conferación Hidrográfica del Cantábrico (CHC).

With this decision, the opinion of the majority of the population, have been respected. Local communities saw in this project a threat not only to their environment, but also their way of make a living: tourism, farming, fishings and agriculture.

ORO NO hopes that this decision has a discouraging effect on any future attempt to extract gold in a location such as Tapia de Casariego that, given its special characteristics, can`t assume a kind of mine like that.

Although this decision from the CAMA can mean the final point for Asturgold’s project, there are still issues to close, such as the expiration of mining claims, which ORO NO consider expired and void. ORO NO will continue to work on those issues and other topics trying to avoid new mining initiatives in the area.

Finally, ORO NO want to thank all the individuals, organizations and institutions that have supported us in this fight against Asturgold’s project, this success is thanks to the efforts of many people. We all together have achieved this success.
