Alexandru Popescu’s progress on his journey to Brussels.
August 31st 2014 – Alexandru Popescu, who has been on hunger strike under the blue sky during last winter, has set off today on his 3150 km long walk for a cyanide-free and frack-free Romania and Europe. Some 50 other activists have joined the start of his walk. He will be on the road for the next 3 months, reaching, among others, Budapest, Vienna, Berlin, Paris and eventually Brussels. On the 1st of December, the National Day of Romania, he will be delivering an antifracking and ban cyanide message in front or inside of the European Parliament.
Day 1 – travelled from Ploiesti to Campina, where he camped in opened air, somewhere near Cornu, sending thank you message to a gs station owner who let him camp on his property.
Day 2 – reached Azuga, after a not-so-good afternoon in Busteni, where he could not camp because of the bears. For the night, Alex was hosted by a friend in Azuga. Many thanks to Andrei Andrassy for accompanying Alexandru Popescu on the second day!
Day 3 – Azuga – Brasov. After reaching Brasov, Alex rested in Mrs. Vasilica Negru’s home and regained power for the next day.
Day 4 – Brasov – Valdeni. A difficult, ascending but beautiful route. Got all the help needed from two saleswomen in a local store.
Day 6 – Făgăraș – Dealul Frumos. September 4th. This morning, in the Transylvanian town of Făgăraș, Alexandru Popescu started the 6th day of his journey on foot to Brussels. His travel has a clear goal: to inform both Romanians and Europeans about the threats posed by both cyanide gold-mining and fracking. In spite of the rainy weather and the long distances he covers each day (aprox. 37 km), Alexandru marches with determination. He is welcomed everywhere with great enthusiasm:
“Some of the drivers saluted by waving and replicating with their klaxons the protest rhythms of plastic bottles from last year’s demonstrations. That gave me the energy to go on”.
His journey will end on the 1st of December in Brussels, after more than 3,000 km on foot, with the belief that the Romanians’ and Europeans’ message to ban cyanide and fracking is worth every effort to be heard!
“So far, our hero has passed through numerous cities in Romania and he just reached the city of Oradea in the North-West as we speak or shall I say, write. We can also confirm that he’s even had some supporters join in for parts of the road, which is so wonderful to hear! This one man’s journey for a better world, deserves all the support possible and we hope that his story will reach far and wide, to inform and inspire to action.” Read more.
